Yesterday, I related
the story of what Gracelyn told me she was expecting good old Santa to deliver in a couple of weeks when he makes his annual visit.
My sister decided that maybe, just maybe she needed to talk to Gracelyn and make sure everyone is on the same Santa page for his big arrival in a few weeks. So, she did and from what I understand Gracelyn is now convinced she's getting some kind of princess doll in addition to the other items she's requested from Santa. I have this strange feeling that this request will morph into something else by the time we get to the actual day of Christmas.
As an uncle, I can't help but sit back and enjoy the hiliarty, knowing full well that someday I will be facing a simliar situation that my family will find just as amusing.
Of course, my father was quick to point out that of the two children, I was the one who deserved this karmic revenge more.
Back when I was younger, we lived in Hawaii, on one of the Air Force Base's there. Every year, the base movie theater would have an afternoon with Santa party. Basically, you'd watch a bunch of Christmas cartoons and then Santa would come out and you'd wait approximately 17 days in line to see him and tell him what you wanted. I remember that the line was long and my mom decided we'd wait in our seats and now have to stand up the whole time, so we were pretty much at the end of the line.
Now, I'd colored a picture to take to Santa and when I got up on his lap and handed him the picture, this lack of greed after the long line of kids going "me, me, me" really touched him. So much so that Santa said those words that every parent dreads hearing, "Santa will bring you whatever you want."
I blurted out that I wanted a Steve Austin from
The Six Million Dollar Man action figure and Santa smiled and said that'd be no problem. Except for one small detail..this was about two days before Christmas and this was the first time I'd brought this particular desire up to anyone. From the way my parents tell the story, they had to scour the island of Oahu for two days to find a Steve Austin action figure and get it under the tree for me when I woke up at approximately 3 a.m. on Christmas morning to see what Santa had brought.
So, we'll wait and see what happens with the continuing saga of Gracelyn and what she wants from Santa. Another opportunity for surprises comes Saturday when she'll have breakfast with Santa at church.
