Last night, I wondered if there were any relief efforts along the lines of the tsunamai show planned to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. This morning, I saw
an article on USA Today's web site that says NBC is leading the way to offer a similiar concert/entertainment event to raise funds for the victims. It's good hear and I can only hope that this will be only one of many ways that people can help the victims of this devestation.
I also heard reports on the news telling us to not panic about the potential gas shortages. According to reports, there could be some since shipping routes have been disrupted, but there is no need to panic just yet--at least not in middle Tennessee. I'm still curious if I have any readers from the Atlanta area about the situation there. I'd heard reports that it was up to five bucks a gallon down there and gasoline was in short supply. Of course, you do have to give credit to the wonderful merchants who own gas stations who never miss a chance to stick it to the American driver by raising gas prices and doing a little price gouging.
Finally, there's the stories of the rampant looting going on in New Orleans. This just makes me sick to my stomach to hear the reports of this. It's gets worse because the mayor of New Orleans has been forced to take 1500 people off the search and rescue teams to patrol the streets and keep the looters in check. The looters are apparently robbing nursing homes, stealing from hospital parking lots, robbing people at gunpoint and shooting at police officers and rescue helicopters. All because they want some electronics or other such valuables to sell. I just don't get the mentality of--gee, we've had a natural disaster and this sure is my chance to have that big screen TV I've always wanted. And to think that because of these morons, victims may die becuase instead of searching and rescuing victims, we have to patrol the streets and keep these idiots in check. It's a shame that when response to this disaster is bringing out the best in a majority of people that there's a minority that has to act like chowderheads and resort to this crap. I hope that our men and women who are looking to restore law and order there and stop the looters are at least given the authorization to use deadly force is necessary.
Maybe we make these thugs who are looters realize that despite the fact that the world has turned upside down that law and order still apply and they get back in check. And then we can get back to the real job--finding survivor and helping those who are really suffering because of this devestation.
