After a couple of weeks of rain-outs, we finally got to take the softball field again last night. And sure, it was only one game instead of the standard double-header and sure we lost the game, but I still had a good time. Our team bookended well with runs in the first and last inning we played. We just had some issues in there in those middle innings.
The last inning, my sister led off. (Have I mentioned how cool it is to get to play on a team with my family?) She got a nice hit and then hustled it to first (OK, she was helped by an errant throw as well, but hey--she got to first!) Then, I got up and after feeling pretty frustrated at the plate in my last at bat, I made contact and got a hit that went down the third base line and miracle of miracles stayed fair. I have to admit I was pretty excited. Then, we each advanced a base on a walk and on a hit by one of our better hitters, both my sister and I were able to plate a run.
Sure, it was in a losing cause, but I was pretty excited to have our family represent so well on the field.
And the other team we played were good sports. Though they did have an injury. They had a woman on their team who slid into second base in shorts and then after running home a couple of plays later (more like a fast trot as you could tell she was in pain), I found out she was more injured than we'd imagined. Seems that she had a "rib popped" out, had been to physical therapy early that day and had it taped up and WAS STILL PLAYING! Now, I am as competitive as the next person and while I admit part of me was intrigued by a woman who'd go out and play with a broken rib, I had to wonder--what in the world?!? They were able to sub for her, since they had an extra lady to do so, which made me wonder why she was playing with a broken rib.
It makes me kind of wince just thinking about it.
