It should come as no shock to anyone that I'm a regular listener to sports talk radio. The fact that Nashville has three stations that all have discussion of sports during both drive times only ensures that this addiction of mine can be fed daily.
But I think you cross a whole new level when you actually participate in the sports talk show.
I called in and e-mailed one show a couple of times while I lived in Georgia but I hadn't actually felt the urge or need to call in or e-mail any of the shows here just yet. Until yesterday...
Listening to 104.5 the Zone's morning show, one subject for debate was just why UT dropped in the polls, despite winning their game Saturday. (It just shows that polls are the stupidest ways to determine a champion in any sport and further invalidates the AP poll in my mind). But as I thought about it and listened, I wondered something and was curious if anyone would bring it up. In my drive, no one did. So I wandered into work and fired off an e-mail with my thoughts, bascially saying I wonder if voters only saw highlights on ESPN in which one play was shown--UAB almost tying up the game on fourth and goal--and not getting the overall picture of the entire game. Also, ESPN and ABC never miss a chance to pile on UT. So, I typed up an e-mail and sent it into the guys.
Honestly, I figured another UT fan out there would call or e-mail and make this point. But apparently I was alone in sending this viewpoint to 104.5. Either that or I articulated it well in my e-mail. Whatever the reason, driving in to work this this morning, Kevin, Frank and Mark took a moment to read out some e-mails on the air. And they read mine...signed, of course, as Big Orange Michael.
Just one more step down the slippery slope of insane, obsessed football fandom for me.
