I've never travelled to the United Kingdom, though I'd like to visit there at some point in my life. And while I've never been there, I've seen parts of the UK and London in particular invaded at various points in the 40 plus years
Doctor Who has been on the air. And as disconcerting as the images of Daleks or Cybermen or whatever alien race has set its sights on the world this week can be within the context of a fictional show, I've always known I can say to myself--well, at least it's not real.
I find myself wishing I could do that today as the news comes out about the terrorist attacks on London. I also found myself concerned for friends I have over there, many of whom I've never met in person, but have made the acquaintance of through the world that is
Doctor Who fandom. Thankfully, it appears that, so far, no one I know has been hurt in this cowardly attack.
That said, I do know that there are people over there who have lost family and friends in today's violence and my thoughts and prayers go out to them.
In looking at some blogs that are out there, I found a fellow Nashvillian,
Tiff whose
entries today really are eloquent and moving. Tiff spent some time in the UK and has friends there. Her postings are moving and I recommend them to you without hesitation.
