"The FOX network has sunk to a new low."
--Lisa Simpson, "Cape Feare"
The Simpsons
The funniest thing about this quote, to me, is that it's from an episode of
The Simpsons that aired in the early 90s. It was true then and it's true today--especially in the light of the latest reality show debacle on FOX is foisting upon the American viewing public.
Tonight at 8 p.m. EST, we get the "event" show of
Who's Your Daddy. For those of you who were watching college football and missed what this show is--basically,
a woman who was adopted at birth chooses from eight men as to who her biological father is. And here I thought that after
Joe Millionaire 2, we couldn't sink any lower.
Now, I don't honestly have an issue with a person who is adopted wanting to find out more about their biological parents. What I do take issue with is the way it's being presented. First of all, it's some kind of game show where you guess who the biological father is and if you guess right you get $10,000. You know, the young lady invovled may have had the best of intentions when this process started, but from looking at how it's presented it doesn't appear so much that she wants answers about her biological fatehr so much as she wants money, her fifteen minutes of fame and a possible Hollywood career.
Of course, it's reality TV on FOX, so what do we expect? The only good reality show FOX has is football.
